20,000 Leagues under the sea - Book cover & interior illustrations
Starting with the cover…
I challenged myself to produce a book cover and three interior illustrations for the annual House of Illustration x Folio Society competition, with this year's book being 20,000 Leagues by Jules Verne. I started by designing the cover, hoping this would give me a feel for the book and what sort of style, colours and themes I would be working with for the interior illustrations.
I decided that I would illustrate the krakens tentacles surrounding the window of the Nautilus, limiting myself to a few colours, using the kraken's red and the gold of the Nautilus for most aspects of the cover. I also wanted to show a subtle, line drawn representation of Captain Nemo's iconic organ inside the window.
A view of Atlantis
For this illustration I wanted to show the moment the divers encounter the lost city of Atlantis. With a stark contrast in colour between the ruined city and the coral that has overtaken the ruins.
This illustration is my representation of the fabled 'Kraken' attacking the Nautilus.
The final illustration is of Captain Nemo's doomed diver, the moment before the shark attack. With the reflection of his helmet showing his impending doom.
To round off the project I decided to illustrate some endpapers for the book, featuring a collection of sea creatures from various depths of the Sea.
